The AiroTEC, Chiang Mai Rajabhat University (CMRU), led by Assistant Professor Worawit Supawimuti, Deputy Director of AiroTEC, together with Assistant Professor Piyawadee Nilsonti, Assistant Professor Dr. Phathranit Kitthitinan, Ms. Patcharin Somphut, and students from the Geography and Geoinformatics Program, conducted an academic outreach workshop entitled “Earthquake Awareness for Older Adults: Understanding Risk Areas and Preparing for Safety.” The workshop was held on Thursday, 16 July 2026 at Rim Nuea Subdistrict Municipality, Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand.
The workshop was designed to enhance participants’ knowledge and understanding of earthquake hazards, increase awareness of high-risk areas, and provide practical guidance on disaster preparedness and appropriate responses during earthquake emergencies. Special emphasis was placed on empowering older adults, who are among the most vulnerable populations, with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively and safely during emergencies, thereby reducing the risks of injury, loss of life, and property damage.
Through a combination of lectures and practical activities, participants learned about the causes and characteristics of earthquakes, methods for identifying high-risk areas, emergency preparedness measures, appropriate actions before, during, and after an earthquake, and basic self-protection techniques. The training aimed to strengthen participants’ confidence and preparedness for responding to earthquake-related emergencies.
This initiative reflects the AiroTEC commitment to integrating expertise in disaster risk management and geospatial technology into community engagement and academic outreach. By promoting disaster preparedness among local residents—particularly older adults—the workshop contributes to enhancing community resilience, reducing disaster risks, and fostering safer and more sustainable communities capable of responding effectively to future natural hazards.
